1:04 am - Introduction
|
This is my first entry so please bear with me ;) I took in 11 rats from a petting zoo that was closing almost 2 years ago & I really had to fight to let them give them up. Of course when I went to pick them up I didn't know there were 11 I thought there were only a few, but I didn't hesitate to take them all. They were not being cared for properly and on pine bedding of all things geez! The mom was so protective, but we eventually got all the babies out. We later learned mom was a baby making machine for the snake they had :( The babies were probably around a few months old so they were quite crazy lol. Now that is almost 2 years they started to have problems. The first one to pass away was stella last month, we tried everything to help her steroids, antibiotics. We even had to hand feed her with droppers, but she slowly got worse and passed away. She either had a stroke or pituitary tumor. We also had to put their precious mum down moya. She had so many problems, she had her eye removed from a bad abscess and when we thought she was doing much better she started losing more weight. The abscess came back and boy was it hiding, she had a hole from behind where her eye was to almost in her mouth. Nothing would heal it and our vet finally said it was most likely from cancer and that's why it wasn't healing.
Last month another girl started having problems with her legs, her balance was off head tilt the whole thing and she would get better than worse. Well she is still hanging in there and fighting. She doesn't drink from her bottle, but we give her lots of moist foods and she gets soy formula and water by droppers everyday. She is doing quite well so I hope she keeps getting better. Her sister baby started showing symptoms now which really concerns me, but honestly I should of never thought these rats would be healthy the rest of their life. One has a booby tumor also. Obviously it's from inbreeding which is sad, but I'm not going to give up. I think this is enough typing for now, but I will always be talking about my ratties on here and in the coming days I will tell you more about all my current rats & my bunny ;)
